Dylan, the jib is the antithesis of all that the junk rig stands for. It will not be needed in a revised modern cambered rig. With what you currently have, it has it's place but going forward, unless you stay with what you have, it will not be needed.

    Hi Dylan,

Welcome to the junk rig community. I agree with David and Paul that the sail set up needs examining based on what is today's best practice. When Michael bought Shantung back in 1978 with the junk rig in place he mentions in his book that there was nobody to ask about how the junk rig works. Fortunately this is not the case today.

Shantung is part of New Zealand maritme history being the first (only?) junk rigged vessel to have sailed around the world with a New Zealand flag. I was fortunate to hear Michael give a talk about his voyage to the Auckland Islands on Shantung - at 50 degrees south this was not an easy voyage. It was however, good preparation for his circumnavigation.

I do hope you have time, Dylan, to join the New Zealand junkies at a junket sometime soon - maybe at Kawau Island around Labour weekend?

    Rob

Shantung is a great boat, however I'd look at turning her into a full junk. The reason for the jib was that at the time Mike built her, there was not much information on junks and junk rigs available in New Zealand (and no internet or Google). The "experts" told him that the boat would not go to the windward without a jib, so he put one on.

Feel free to contact me should you need assistance with the rig.

Paul's comments are very worthwhile. The jib adds unnecessary complication to the rig. If you are needing to do any work on the sail it would be a good exercise to incorporate a lot of junk rig knowledge which has been accumulated over the last couple of decades which includes a camber panel sail to help with windward performance. There are some very knowledgeable people in the JRA, such as Paul, Arne, or David Tyler who will all be able to assist with making sure the rig works effectively on the boat.

    Hi Dylan,

As David Thatcher has said. I and the previous owner of my current boat (Le Canard Bleu), Brain Owen had the good fortune to be friends with Mike Churchhouse. Sadly Mike passed away about two years ago shortly after he turned 90.

Shantung is an intriguing boat Dylan.

I saved some of the pictures from when she was for sale.

    Congratulations on becoming her custodian.

Do you plan to keep her foresail with Junk main rig?

Hi me and my dad recently purchased a lidgard 31 junk rig in nz and we are looking for any information/stories of her, her name is shantung

The book 'Against the wind' by Michael and Judy Churchouse describes their round the world voyage in Shantung. The book was self published so there may not be many copies around. If you do not have, or are unable to find a copy of this book I would happy to sell you my copy at an extremely reasonable price. If you are interested contact me by email. Cheers  David
