    Merci for all these information.

I'll try to build a new model for the AGM Junket.

Excellent memory. And here it is:

Oh well done for finding that photo, Graeme  I went through a heap of magazines, but thought that I remember a photo from earlier.  I didn't go that far into the 90s.  I think the tan sail is the original model - it has the Sunbird logo on it.  I hadn't realised that there was ever more than one rig.  As you say, they look considerably larger than I recalled.  more like 10:1.

I've trawled through all the early newsletters and this is the only image I have been able to find. It was taken at the Beaulieu Classic Boat Festival of June 1997 and refers to the JRA stand at that event. The reporter was Robin Blain.

Not a very clear photo but enough to show the size and proportions.

JRA Newsletter  issue 34  April 1999 page 7

On further study of the photo (enlarged a bit) it looks as though there are two of them: the tan sail on the left and a white junk sail centre, partly behind the man in the middle of the photo. Both model rigs look to be considerably taller than 60cm.

The caption refers to "3 working model rigs that were borrowed from Sunbird Marine..." - so I guess that thing on the right is also some kind of working model.

Maybe that will jog some memories.

The newsletter article (Issue 34) also states that "Sunbirds have built and supplied a model junk rig for Bruce Roberts in the USA so members going to boatshows in the States should see it on display".

The only other reference I could find to a model junk rig is in Issue 30 (July 1995) where there is an article by Robert Bolton with photos of a RC controlled model junk with a Reddish rig. This model is not attributed to Robin Blain though it is the subject of a letter written to him.

As I recall, it was about 60 cm high.  Some of the older magazines show it at various Boat Shows - I'll see if I can find a photo.

Good question. I can't remember too well. At least 60cm as Annie says. I look among my old picture files.

I stayed with Robin and Mandy for a week in 1999 and attended the annual JRA AGM. Robin had on display what is being described here. It was an impressive piece of gear. Was it property of the JRA or private property? Problem is, it can only be in one place at a time. However, I suppose one could do video demonstrations of different aspects.

This is why I promoted the 3D, animated interactive we have on our home page. It still isn't finished, awaiting complete labeling.

    Bonsoir

Does anyone knows what happened to the Junkrig mockup that was presented at  the Southampton boat show a "few" years ago !

I remember the tiny stand with that mockup with middle age men demonstrating the sail up and down reefing and unreefing.

I don't know why but it is associated, in my mind with a pile of small thin plywood and a dinghy construction competition or something like that. It might be the next by stand.

If it still exist it could be a nice support to demonstrate junkrig to the Roscoff froggies !

    Eric

That model was used to demonstrate junk rig to people at boat jumbles by Robin Blain. Sadly, both Robin and his wife Mandy have now passed away. It was through meeting Robin and studying his model that I became a junk rig enthusiast and a JRA member. I'd love to know what became of his models.
