On the other hand, if you have seen Pete on Sampson Boat Co (Tally Ho on you tube) He doesn't have a sore ankle, actually he doesn't seem to have any ankles at all, having had both feet removed by a train, but still builds and sails boats. I would suggest a brace though. Oh, and get healed quickly. All the best.

P.S. Pete has had a number of years to get used to walking without his own feet, you are new to not being able to use one of yours. Take it easy.

It seems that this thread attracts junkies with injuries. In mid-July I had an accident which left my best hand in considerable disrepair. Only recently have I been able to get in a couple of outings again. Sailing is an activity where two operational hands are VERY useful...

Someday I will laugh about that accident  -  maybe...

    Take care,

At the moment there’s plenty of bits and bobs to do non-sailing-wise. Window sealing, one or two soft spots, lead lines aft, raise the sheeting point, build a tabernacle, and step the mast mast when it arrives. Definitely going to be busy for the foreseeable. Seems Peggy and I are in matching states of disrepair haha.

Are there sailors out there with dud feet? What issues do you run into when sailing, and how do you work around them? My ankle will probably be mostly recovered by the time I’m getting close to properly sailing, fingers crossed. If it isn’t though I’d love to be prepared and have drills I can do so when the time comes I can still get out and go sailing.

    Ouch!

Having spent this summer nursing a broken wrist I can empathise with you, what a drag!

One thing I seriously considered is that with such an injury you are not really in full command of your vessel. If you have any sort of emergency, like damage to the boat or a guest overboard situation, you are not in the optimum position to be able to cope with it. You have to judge that for yourself though as the ankle heals up.

    Ouch, that doesn't sound good,
If you still have to move around on your boat, I suggest you strap on a suitable kneepad onto that sore knee.

    Hello everyone!

been busy with my boat but hit a slight snag. I broke my right ankle! Getting on my boat feels precarious at best and down right terrifying at worst.

My current technique comprises of kneeling on the dock with my right knee. Placing my left foot on the gunnel; grabbing a line tied on to the grab rails; then explosively standing up on my left and kicking my right knee up for momentum. Then I land with my knee on the cabin top and find my balance point over said knee. Final step is to then gently fall on to my side so the left leg clears the guardrails. Then I can hobble down the side with my foot on the side deck and my knee on the cabin top. It’s not pretty but it works. Long term I’m looking for something that puts a bit less impact on my right knee.

Are there any sailors out there with experience of boarding a boat without putting weight on their foot? Or any tips on how to adapt the boat?

    All the best,

    Zachary.
