David, I think it's a pretty close run thing - the last 10 years have provided an opportunity to learn a whole new nautical language... Now none of my friends understand half of what I say :-)

Hey, there's even more jargon with a steam engine than with JR! We don't have HP and LP crosshead slideways, let alone leaking clacks. We can only boast of having a LHP and a YHP.

Anyway, good to hear that Befur is out there sailing.

Well we seem to have reached some kind of "end point" in the building of the Steam Yacht Befur. This post records (photographically) our first real day of attempting to sail her, and note the thanks we owe to JRA and Steamboat Association of the UK members and friends for helping us reach this point...

I guess particular thanks go to the man at Beale Park in 2011 with the model of a junk rig on his stand (and time to talk/demonstrate), Arne Kverneland (for the sail making notes) and David Tyler (for advice on sails and suppliers), PJR for being the complete bible it is - and all the others who provided much needed encouragement.

Thanks for avoiding cracking a joke!

When the time comes, we will happily provide transport from Ravenglass to Windermere...Until then, stay safe!

Oh, no! Bad luck. Better not (ahem) 'crack' any Humpty Dumpty jokes, then, had we? I hope you mend soon.

Yes, I can get around to Windermere, but timing depends on if/when I can get a Scottish cruise in, and if/when the trains open up to non-essential travellers again.

    And from today:

So there's nothing to stop you putting that smart-looking sail to good use on Ullswater or Windermere! [is a steam yacht a "motorised craft", though?]

ahh. I thought so too...but a few hours later I fell of a ladder (working on the transom) and fractured my skull! ...and to add insult to injury, while in Carlisle Infirmary an infected man was  fetched into my "tested clear ward" - so now we are in quarantine for 2 weeks... :-( ...well by the time that quarantine is finished (and my head is sufficiently unscrambled). we will be at full stretch finishing and launching asap (at end of June by intent).... as to the "motorised craft" question, I guess it depends on if I light the boiler or raise the sail?  Be assured however David, I will be hoping you can visit Windermere to help us learn to sail and set the rig, if that is possible...

Thanks again for your support so far David...

Oh, well done.  The sail looks lovely.  A does the boat herself.  Windermere beckons ...
