I think that Ti Gitu, a 40ft steel schooner, would be a pretty good initial guide to what might be required. The masts are steel, 46ft above deck and 10in diameter at deck level.

I'd try sending a message to Paul, the owner, requesting further advice, as he's a professional and knows what he's talking about.

Hi thanks for tip... that yacht is a winner. I can see why he chose it. steel, keels, and junk... safety, simplicity and stable twin keel for parking anywhere upright.
I like it, and agree with all the trade offs.

ah thanks, the current Ally mast is keel stepped, it is something i will look into as far as i can and report back.

I would however be very pleased to be told that you have that matter well considered and well in hand.

    Just a quick further thought.

Was your boat originally designed for junk rig and / or keel stepped masts in the positions that you would put masts for junk rig?

If not you might be well advised to do some research and perhaps take advice on whether there could be structural issues.  The last thing that you would want is to have your new possibly heavy wooden masts going through the bottom of the boat when pitching heavily in a seaway.

I would however be very pleased to be told that you have that matter well considered and well in hand.

Hi All, I have bought a cheap boat to experiment with junk rigging, its a 40' ferro

wilf O'keele design. professionally made in 82-84.

the hull shows no sign of error. and has a certain charm. it has an aft cabin, and center cockpit. overall the roofs and cabin needs replacing, and the engine needs renovation.

basically, it needs work. but its perfect for a first yacht, and i look forward to doing it up.

as I am looking into junk riggs, I am interested in finding out what sort of mast heights i will need for two masts on a 40' ferro?

i imagine it needs a fair bit of power... I am sending letters to pole companies, getting quotes, so i am looking for specific info such as height, taper, wall thickness etc...

should i get steel, aluminium, or if the price is off the wall, ill make them from wood.

many thanks for input, and ill put up a few photos soon soyou can chart my progress...

    many thanks
