I am working from the presumption that we own no copyrights.
First we have to prioritise which books to digitise.
Secondly we need to trace the owners of the copyright, author or publisher, and seek their permission, where possible.
Thirdly we need to decide the degree of text search ability we need or desire.

With books that are long out of print, authors that are long deceased, and publishers that are out of business, then we can proceed with caution, I am advised.  What we cannot, and should not do, is to try and sell the digitised versions.  We can let our members have access to the digitised versions strictly for their own use and information.

Finally with current authors and publishers, we must make contact and seek their permission.

What we need to decide is the degree of text searchability we should be aiming for, and which are the most important books to tackle first.

There are some historical comments on e-Books in the 'Read Any Good Books Lately?' thread of the JRA etc website forum.

Well, it's not in the library but I think it should be.

While I was visiting Robin to scan the Worcester book, he showed me a copy of the original catalog and description of Keying, the Foochow Pole Junk which sailed from Hong Kong to London via New York in 1848. This 31-page leaflet was only available on board in 1848, but given the number of visitors she had it's probably not that rare. No author attribution, but generally supposed to have been written by Captain Kellett, part-owner and captain of Keying, and clearly not someone who has a problem with self image.

Interesting little bit of history, though, so I scanned that too, and have now digitised it. It's in my 'box' if anyone wants to add it to the library downloads.

Note: on Jan 1st 2014 a new book about the voyage of the Keying by renowned maritime historian and Director of the Hong Kong Maritime Museum Stephen Davies will be published - East Sails West: The Voyage of the Keying, 1846--1855.

By the way, this document was sold on board for 6d - what's that worth today?

    Hi Chris

Lovely drawings in the Worcester book, Chris - well done and thanks. Ditto the Keying leaflet. I'll copy the latter into our JRA Library location asap and make it available from the Library page. The Worcester book will be uploaded as soon as you let me know it's 'done', ie a v2 via Annie.

This book has now been published, and I have just read it - it is excellent, and definitive.

Possibly a copy should be in the JRA library? And also, by the same author, this one, HK$ 490 = £38.50 would seem to be a good investment.

I agree with you Chris: both books should be in our library and by today's standards, they are a very reasonable price.  I don't suppose they do an e-version, but one would be good for people with large, high-definition screens.  Alas, I have no space for either volume.

If no-one else on the committee picks up on it first, I'll suggest it.

Annie, I've copied those posts into the Committee Forum so we can reach a heap big decision there. East Sails West is £34.50 online from Waterstones. haven't checked anywhere else. It's also on Amazon who have a Kindle edition.

"East Sails West" is in Amazon.com in the Kindle edition, but not in Amazon.co.uk
I found a link to click to request a Kindle edition in amazon.co.uk, so that's what I did. I guess the book is so new that they haven't got around to it yet.

I have hard copies of both books in my library. My intention is to set up a JRA New Zealand Library before I leave on my trip. Still looking for a stable shore base to house it.
