A collaboration between Victor Winterthun, Arne Kverneland and myself resulted in a 64.2m² sloop rig for my Jasmine, a 32ft Samson C-Mist.

I am weeks away from being able to report on initial sea trials.

    Myles,

I find it difficult to get enough sail area on a heavy displacement vessel with a long keel. This Colin Archer-like thing needs a jib on a bowsprit to get the CE right. Rigging with a JR schooner will most probably result in too much weather helm unless the rudder is replaced with the sort of rudder that Paul Thompson designed for his La Chica.

Now I have made a couple of tries with drawing a yawl rig. The one with 55sqm mainsail plus  8sqm mizzen didn’t look too extreme. The tip of the yard would be taller than the topsail of the gaffrig. This rig should ensure easy steering in most cases, and the (flat) mizzen could help with sitting steadily at anchor. Frankly, I think that even this ‘small’ JR would be faster than the original rig. The rig could be made even taller. It depends on what sort of mast you are able to make or purchase.

Another method, in case the gaffrig is still OK, is to simply replace the gaff mainsail with a junksail, and keep the rest of the rig as it is. You don’t get all the benefits of a JR this way, but you get the easy reefing of the main. With the jib (and staysail?) on rollers, that rig should be quite easy to deal with.

Question: Is the gaffrig (cutter or ketch?) in good order, and how does your boat sail with it?

    What about this one?

to get 70 2/m that’s going to be some tall rig

Hy Myles....yes you are right Im 74 and Personally I would not feel comfortable handling anything over 50 ms....then again,....My ideal boat rather samallish would displace bellow 5 Tn.  That said...the beauty of the junk isi ts ability to reduce sail almost any time anywhere!....if this is to be a long term relationship....I would try my best to be happy and properly powered from day one....or you'll be miserable for  the duration

    good luck

There is a 52/54 2/m rig on the swap sell site

my perso calculations for my double ender 10.5 m

    x 3.2m long keeled 10 t displacement boat with 1.6 m draft comes out at between 60 2/m and 65 2/m

however im in the med  therefore it s either winds are to light or to strong and everyone resorts to turning the engine on and at best motor sailing

i also would not want batons longer than 6 m

    any thoughts?

    thanks

I live and sail everyday on the Med.  Personally, and opinions galore, I feel that you will be  very disappointed with a 52 ms sail. The winds on the Med, specially around coastal areas are very fickle, and mostly light....if you feel like saili g a good part of your time....

again,  ....I rather sail than motor
