    Hi, HW.

I tried another experiment using my mobile phone (cell), with Android 10.

After logging on, I clicked on "JRA Magazine".

Ignore the index which pops up on the right with the "Box" index in it. Trying to download from there didn't work for me either.

Instead I clicked on the word "index" displayed below the "JRA Magazine" title.

This brought a full index of the newsletters and magazines with a clickable link for each issue.

Clicking on this link opened up the magazine and when that was fully opened in the magazine form, I could save the file as a PDF in the downloads section of my phone.

Again tried it twice and it worked perfectly both times. A little slow but no more than a minute. Depends on connection speed, I suppose.

At least you will be able to read about Alleda on your phone and while I haven't tried it, I'm pretty sure one can transfer PDF files from the phone to the laptop.

It might work for you, including on an Apple phone.

I’ve now experimented using my Linux Suse machine, my main computer with both the Firefox and Chrome browsers, then my Windows 10 machine which is normally used for only one application, using the MS Edge browser, and my Ipad on Safari from which I’m currently writing.   All attempts failed when accessing through Box.

For whatever reason Box simply doesn’t work for me.   I appreciate the download link that was generously provided.

    Anyway,
I have downloaded all of them (in medium format, mostly) so they are not lost. I also think of re-scanning NL 1-20 in the hope to make them look a little better.

    1. I am fairly sure the editor will have them all safely stored somewhere, or at least someone on the Committee will.

I've just spoken with the editor and she doesn't keep the whole archive, the digital copies seem to reside in Box and hopefully they are all there. When the new website comes online the magazines will be delivered/retrieved natively in the website rather than from something like Box as far as the editor knows, the members who are working on the new website would know more about this. The treasurer keeps surplus old magazines so there should be a real physical archive there somewhere.

Most problems with Box seem to be 1) Box itself not being the most user friendly system and 2) compatibility with the myriad browsers out there and individual settings.

As for indexing; the editor and I as we get to know the new publishing software intend to use its powerful indexing functions with future issues of the magazine and if I have time I'll augment David's previous indexing of past issues.

I like Howard's suggestion of a compendium of articles but on the other hand a good index will do the job and one of the joys of digging through old newsletters to find something specific is that you get sidetracked with all sorts of wonderful stories!

Well, how bizarre!  Box really is appallingly user-unfriendly.  I find that when I click on the arrow to go to page 2, nothing happens half the time.  Anyway, it's good to know that they are there.  I shall try searching further into the list and see if they are well out of sequence or something!

This reminded me that I have some missing in my digital files and quite a lot are at low res.

    1.  I am using a Galaxy s6 Tab Lite with Firefox.
    2. When I click on the file I want, Box starts to load the pdf.  If I hit the arrow at top left or on the bottom of my screen, I return to the list and am presented with a button with three dots ...  If i click on that button, I then get the choice to download and even with my slow mobile data, it was pretty much instantaneous.
    3. Issues 57 to 62, inclusive, appear to be missing.
    4. Earlier issues are all in low res and most of them only available as landscape. I would suggest that most people these days could download HR and certainly MR.  I think all the magazines should be offered in both formats and at least as MR.  I am fairly sure the editor will have them all safely stored somewhere, or at least someone on the Committee will.
    5. The index is well out of date.  I think David Chidell tries to keep it up to date.  Maybe someone else could volunteer and give him a break.
Edit: Actually, when I went looking, I couldn't find issues 63, 64 and 65, either.

    i just checked with firefox:

    • if i go to 'magazines' → 'index' i can confirm your experience.: no preview and eternal 'download in progress' – but only for some of the newsletters. (i.e. #1 and #2 work well…)
    • if i just click 'magazines' without the sub menu, then i see all the .pdf files in their boxes and i can download them by use of the menu on the right of the respective file.

.............Thanks for your contribution.   I don't know what the solution is.

There is enough material in these older editions that it would be nice if perhaps impractical to have a bound book (s) containing the collected articles indexed up to some arbitrary date like 2020.   Likewise the technical articles.
