I think our great leader, Mark Case has found a pragmatic and good solution.
On his Maxi 95 with electric propulsion, he has added a standard, off-the-shelf 220V generator. This is enough to keep a speed of around 4 knots (I think it was) for as long as the petrol lasts. I bet Mark tries to avoid using the generator, but at least it does away with any ‘range neurosis’, which many drivers of electric cars suffer from.

    Worth considering.

Hi Arne, yes that is a well-known way of dealing with the issue. I'll be opening a thread on the technical forum soon to discuss things electrical.

Good Luck Paul, Alan and Zebedee. Paul I will be really interested to see your electric auxiliary in these pages when it happens. Our Badger Constance currently has a diesel with saildrive but we love the "motoring silently" (and without fumes, relatively free of pollution and grubby maintenance) idea.

    All best wishes from Constance.

Thaks Pol, I'll open a thread over at technical soon.

Lovely boat - best wishes (the joy of future cruising) to Paul - and best wishes to Alan too, I hope we see you back in NZ in the future. I'm very much looking forward to reading about the technicalities of the proposed electric auxiliary. I think I'll "pass" on the Chateau Zebedee, but was never an educated connoisseur so cheers to the tradition anyway!

Thanks Graeme, I'll be setting up entries in the Technical Forum shortly. I do know that you will be interested in the electric motor installation as I believe you are or were planning something along those lines for your scow.

Five years ago I sold my beloved junk rigged Tahitianna LC, as my wife wanted a bigger boat. A year later she died and I had a boat (LCB also known as Almada de Quack) that although lovely, at 39ft was too big for me. As folks here will know, I converted her to junk rig and I've had a lot of fun with her.

Finally, 5 years later I have another boat that reflects me and that I can be content with again. I had the good fortune to be approached by Alan Martienssen and asked if I'd take over the care of Zebedee, his junk rigged Badger 34. Alan had decided to swallow the anchor and return to the UK.

They say not to look a gift horse in the mouth! I said yes as fast as I could get the words out. Zebedee was of course well known to me as I raced against her many times while I still had LC in various impromptu races and at New Zealand's annual Tall Ships Regatta.

As JRA members are likely well aware, Under Alan's care, Zebedee circumnavigated 11/2 times and she of course is quite well known in the New Zealand junk community.

As she is engineless. I'll be giving her a small electric motor and of course new sails that I'll be making. I'll also be taking a look at her rudder. Apart from the above, I'll be keeping her very much as Alan kept her. I'll be commenting about the various changes and inviting discussion over at the technical forum.

Alan has passed on to me the secret Château Zebedee recipe and I'll continue to serve that wine. Skatty my Maine Coon ships cat will continue to supervising as usual.
