    I'm surprised Gecko displaces as much as 8000 lbs, which is 3.6 tonnes.  My 26ft fibreglass boat displaces more like 3 tonnes.  However, Fantail is a fair comparison with your boat.  My anchor gear consists of a 10kg Manson Supreme and 25m of 8mm chain, backed up by a lot of 12mm nylon.  I have been anchored in 55 knots and, touch wood, have never dragged.  I can't recommend the Manson too highly - it is exponentially better than a CQR, Bruce or Danforth.

    I have seen several boat considerably larger than mine anchoring on the same ground tackle and reckon that it's probably conservative.  But I like the security.  I would think the same set up would be perfectly acceptable for Gecko: if you are super-cautious, go up to a 15 kg Manson.

    I have a 7.5 kilo Bruce as a second anchor, with its own chain and warp.  Ideally, I'd have a three piece, 25lb Herreschoff fisherman anchor in case I have to anchor in rock or weed, but it's not an issue in my present cruising ground.

    Good ground tackle is cheap insurance!

    Having bought Gecko, I am looking at ground tackle.  When I looked up possible loads from winds and wave in a storm in The Complete Anchoring Handbook, I come up with a value approaching 5000lbs (although French, the author used mostly imperial units).  I looked up chain which has a corresponding working load, and he gives me 12mm, or half an inch.  That seems a bit chunky, but I don't have enough experience to quibble.  I never looked that closely at other boats' chains.  On the other hand, when I looked at windlasses, I found 10mm chain specified for anchors up to 25kg, which is rather heavier than required for Gecko, unless it's a Fisherman anchor.

    Then I checked what sort of rode has the same working load.  For nylon, I find 30mm, or one and a quarter inch.  I think if I had seen that on a boat the size of Gecko (26ft, 8000lbs), I would have noticed.

    So I ask once more for the advice of more experienced people.  What is reasonable?
