You all just want to keep talking about how to improve performance, and your own theories about how a sail performs and how the slot effect works, and bumble bees and dimpled golf balls.
All great stuff, and this has turned out to be a great thread.
But mostly beside the point.
Even Karl is now saying “Simply, the object was not to de-tune one model for the conditions to make them perform the same. Actually, going by two sail theory, the SJR may have even performed a little better if the mainsail was maybe 2% less in daft and if so, I would not consider that unfair if it further boosted it's performance! Etc etc”
It’s all beside the point.
The question has nothing to do with this camber or that camber or how to improve the performance of this or that. Those questions are all a long way off in the future.
The question here is simple: why was there a difference in the behaviour of these two simple and supposedly equivalent models?
First, we must look at the apparatus, and at our assumptions.
I question whether it is valid to regard a sjr as two separate sails, and I question whether the two models are truly equivalent in camber. This leads to a question about the experimental apparatus itself.
Therin may lie the answer. I am not sure.
That is all I wanted to say. I give up.
[By the way Karl and Arne, I can’t take credit for that clever aphorism “the sail that shouldn’t work but does”. It actually came from Arne. I think I remember Arne referring to his “rounding” method of making a cambered panel in those very terms. I can’t find the original quote now, but I am sure it is Arne's.]
