I don’t want to get drawn any further into a discussion about what type of junk rig is “best” as that wasn’t really the subject of this thread. Actually, I would like to see the Ljungstrom rig re-cut and completed. And I am not a “protagonist” of SJR either. I just find that mine suits my circumstances best and I know it’s good.
I think Arne’s latest post, one of his very best, in which he humbly pays tribute to others upon which his great contribution rested – summed up the real situation: the great breakthrough in junk rig is the deliberate application of camber to what was an originally flat-cut type of sail.
At best, the rest is refinement.

I still want to return to Karl’s experiment.
I had another look at the video, which is a little bit deficient in displaying exactly how the apparatus was set up, and how the results were measured. We can dive deeper into that if Karl wants to – maybe we could publish a drawing of the apparatus in the magazine, and invite others to replicate.
What caught my eye this time was the cambers that were used in what was intended to be a matched comparison. If we regard the SJR as two separate sails, each of them with 8% camber – then we might think it is a fair comparison with a contiguous sail which has 8% camber.
(In my SJR I put 10% camber into the jibs and 8% into the mains (more or less) – this might be too much for a sail which is tended to sail very fast, but it seems to suit my boat well enough.)
However, I am not convinced that Karl’s assumption is valid. If we see the SJR as a composite single sail, which has a slot in it (which is the way I see it) then the SJR model looks to have less camber than the contiguous model.
Without going into the merits or otherwise performance-wise, I just observe that if the SJR model were given more camber in the jib (and possibly also a little more in the mains?) and regard it as a single sail, it would then fit more closely to the envelope of the contiguous sail, and the comparison might be more like apples with apples. Just a thought. I am not sure if my crude drawing shows what I mean.

(Slieve’s comments on the nature of the model cambers (batten-to-batten rather than distributed in the form of a bulge between battens, as in real life) is another good observation, but mitigated somewhat by the fact that the same “fault” applies to both models).
My comment is that the two models might not actually be matched in camber.
This might explain the difference in the heeling that Karl observed. Just a thought.
(On an even simpler basis, a sail with a big hole in it might be expected to heel a little less than one which doesn't "leak"?)
