Dr Julian Mustoe
I am sad to inform you of the death of Dr Julian Mustoe after a short illness, aged 93.
He crossed the Atlantic twice on small engineless boats in the 1960s. He is perhaps best known for the Voyage of the Harrier: In retirement he took a 25' junk-rigged, modified Folksong on a solo circumnavigation following in the wake of HMS Beagle. He lost the first Harrier off the coast of Argentina but determined to continue the adventure he acquired a Peterson 26 locally, and a year or so later continued. He subsequently completed his circumnavigation 11 years after starting, aged 78. His next cruise was to explore the ports and trading routes of the Hanseatic League, during which he sadly lost his second yacht in the North Sea. Undeterred by this set back, friends crowdfunded a Hunter 26 which he lived on into his 90s. He planned an East Coast Cruise based around the "Magic of the Swatchways". Sadly, this final adventure was not completed. He died at St Elizabeth's Hospice, Ipswich on the 30th September.
