    Thanks Howard.

Yes these older designs are mostly a bit narrow overall beam.  So as well as being far too big, it is a workable compromise.

As I see it now one of the main issues will be dealing with the present mast, unless I can find someone who would like it.

Alleda is the inspiration for my proposed conversion, though hopefully I can achieve something a bit more elegant for the tabernacle support.   I am just start reading his book, sailing round the world, though prior to the junk conversion.

    Mark:

I was reading the thread on the Minimus II design parameters and construction.   I concluded several years ago that the only boat for my purposes is a multihull, and further narrowed it down to a catamaran, both for load carrying capacity versus a trimaran of the same size, and the typical bridge deck cabin with panoramic view.   I expect to sail mostly solo, so the fatigue factor of living on your ear, and constant rolling is a significant safety issue, and the internal shelter at bridge deck level with a view for nasty weather is a very significant value for the same reason.... it doesn't need to have standing headroom there.  I briefly considered constructing a boat..but that's more than I want to bite off at my age.   I've built a number of small boats, and it's always more work than you anticipate by several times.

Your boat is one of very few readily available commercially built boats in the the optimal size range for me, but it has a pretty pathetic payload, and I'm not comfortable with the narrow beam.  I believe there is also a structural issue with the centerboard case that I would want to investigate and mitigate.   A nice comfortable boat, generally well designed with a good reputation.

I ran across a junk rigged conversion not so long ago.... and just "refound" it here:

A very interesting tabernacle setup.... The problem on a boat this size would be the space that the masts would take out of the hull.

The Minimus II uses irrigation pipe...not an optimal alloy, but available in suitable length.  The method he used for inner sleeving is worth looking at... very simple.  I've used this method on projects before successfully.    It would allow you to use irrigation pipe outer, and a good (ideal) alloy like 6061 T6 as inner sleeving toward the bottom... Not generally available over 20'  (6M).

Having sold my Corramandel it is time to start thinking about the next project.

It has to be a multihull, junk rigged of course.

There is not a lot on the market that suits me, though that does bounce between a cruiser to take friends or a small single hander.

I had just about given up looking and fired up by David Omick’s wee cat, I was getting serious about my dream build project, a small simple proa, very much on the lines of Minimus 2.  I have been in contact with David who was very helpful.

But then an Iroquois has come up at an attractive price, so may end up jumping in that direction.

She will need a junk rig, with I think a biplane layout.  They weigh around 3t, and the present sail area is 32sqm.  So I would give it a little bit more, say 18sqm per mast.

For the mast probably a hybrid, using, say, a 102x3.2mm 6082 alloy for the main section, timber top, and some beefing up on the lower part.  Perhaps that is too light?  But hey, I have a spare!

I was trying to locate the mast excel sheet on the website without luck, can anyone point it out.

For the sail, perhaps a much desired David Tyler wing is too ambitious, so something a bit simpler for now.

    Any comments?

    Thanks, Mark
