Junk wanted.

Having converted a boat to junk, I know how much more time and effort are involved than I supposed at the beginning of the project. I'm seriously thinking of converting my present boat, a Wylo 32 gaffer, but with the benefit of experience would prefer to sell her and buy a vessel already junk rigged, of roughly similar size.

Does anyone have a boat in seaworthy condition that they might consider selling? I have looked at the Sunbird website and found nothing to tempt me there. I see Haiku is for sale at a very attractive price, but she's in California and I'm in England. Seems a long way to go to look at a boat.

Are you prepared to travel as far as the Med, Asmat?  This boat: http://www.junkrigassociation.org/noticeboard_forum/1290075?tpg=2 might still be for sale.

    Dear Asmat,

I few years back I had a look at this boat,  (still advertised, though that may not mean anything).

I was on holiday nearby, popped over.  It was not good timing for me, so I did not go further though was tempted.  I like the indestructability of steel, and made by the Holland, the masters of building steel boats, well made. If you find she is still for sale, let me know and I could dig out photos etc.

    cheers Mark

Thank you Annie and Mark for your replies. Annie, I'd be happy to visit the Med but this boat is simply too expensive.  (Mingming appeals strongly, but my wife may have reservations about extended cruising aboard her).

Mark, your link to the Wibo lying in Antwerp interests me. I've written to Robin at Sunbird requesting details (assuming she's still for sale). If you have any photos to hand, I'd like a look at them, together with any comments you may care to make on her overall condition and suitability for extended cruising.

    Kind regards, Asmat

Maybe.  I bought a junk-rigged Benford Dory 28, Badger's little sister.  The boat needs some work before I consider it seaworthy and suitable for extended cruising.  In order of priority: There is only a single bow roller and neither a locker for the anchor rode, nor a windlass.  My current plan is for a pair of Brent Swain style reels and at least two well separated bow rollers.  Second, the cockpit lockers are open to the hull.  If the boat went aground and lay on its side, the hull would flood through the cockpit lockers before it would float.  That strikes me as distinctly suboptimal.  Third, I want a split junk sail, fourth, windvane self steering, fifth, a rotating pram hood and sixth, I want to make the rudder more effective.

I bought the boat in the hope of taking a year off for some extended cruising, but now it looks like this will only be possible in four or five years.  Meanwhile, I find that a boat five times as heavy as my previous largest boat is bigger than I want.  It's certainly big enough for me to live on for a year, but for anything else I want to do it's far too big.

I need to sort out the anchors and cockpit lockers in early summer, when it will again be warm enough in Trondheim to work with epoxy.  I may be able to make a split junk sail during winter.  You could have a holiday here in late summer, sailing the boat before you decide.

I have a junk ketch freedom 30 which I would consider selling. GRP encapsulated lead centreboard (taking draft to 2m) with 1 metre draft long keel. Bit smaller than your Wylo but Nick Skeates and I did some closed quarters sailing at Newtown Creek in her. He will give you an expert rundown on her.

The original post mentioned Haiku, a Cape George 36 for sale here in California.

I wonder, are the JRA folks already familiar with Haiku?  Can you tell me anything about her?

I'm hoping to meet with Robin Loehr and see Haiku in Moss Landing in January.  I'm a junk newbie, but I like the concept.
