    With the wind. I am pretty sure they can go upwind though. Not sure how much. I get the idea that many kites require constant attention (ie. those made for kite boarding). There are kites made for less attended use but if the wind dies, I think they all need attention faster (to prevent fouling on the boat) than any other wind propulsion. So emergency, yes, cruising? maybe not.

    Impractical IMHO for anything but emergency, but imaging having a sailboat without even a mast and sail, and a tangle of standing and running rigging, etc!!
