    Hello Tom - A quick question: do you have a foiled rudder on your CP-23, or the original flat plate? I ask because having the foiled version (aftermark or later model from Hutchins) makes a *huge* difference in how the CP-23 sails and handles in general.

    Back in the early 00's I made my own foiled rudder prototype to check it out, and that turned into what developed into the aftermarket rudder from Joel at IdaSailor, which is pretty much what Hutchins adopted. Joel used my design work to fab it up, and I did the on-water testing.

    Are you a member at the CPYOA website? Good info & people there; I admin/host it.

    The idea of converting my compac 23 mk3 to JR has been on the top of my mind lately. This website has provided invaluable insight. Thank you to everyone who contributes. Here's my questions:

    How far forward should I move my mast for a modern hasler/McLeod rig setup?

    How tall should the mast be above the partners?

    I'd like to follow the 3% rule for mast weight, which would be 90lbs for my boat's displacement of 3000lbs. Is this feasible for a aluminum mast? Hybrid mast? Or hollow sitka spruce mast? 

    For an aluminum mast, what thickness and diameter would I need?

    Would it be feasible to step/unstep the mast by hand or would a tabernacle be needed to avoid needing a crane to accommodate trailering twice per year.
