Hunter liberty cat ketch

The Junk main and bermudan mizzen seem like a really good combination - I'll be sailing my Liberty 22 singlehanded mostly and like the idea of only going on deck when it suits me.

The original mast will probably not do for a junk main - it has to be round section i know. I could make one I guess - I have a copy of PJR and could get the scantlings, but does anyone know how I might procure an aluminium mast with the correct taper?

    Thanks,

    Roger.

Thank you for looking at this Arne. It looks like the perfect rig for me and my boat. I will start making plans to make this sail over the winter. I wonder if I can use the existing mast for this sail ? It is a sleeved and reinforced mast from the second lot of  Liberty boats. I can definitely cope with raking aft and maybe cutting down on length if need be. There is a Liberty main mast for sale on eBay which I might be able to buy.

    Maybe something like this?
I guess a separate port-starboard sheet system, tied to the end of the battens, and then down to the aft corners of the cabin would work?

I have tilted the sail two degrees aft. This should make the sail just about bullet-proof against sheet-batten tangle.

Unfortunately moving the mizzen mast would not be possible without a major rebuild, but I wonder if the junk mainsail would work if it was smaller in area ? Say 130 sq ft and the mizzen in the same position but a smaller sail about the same size as the existing reefed mizzen. The boat hull is easily driven and is well balanced with either a reef in the main or a reef in the mizzen.

    Interesting idea, Bill.
Is there a simple way to move the mizzen mast , say 50cm aft from the present position?

My other thoughts were to stay with the existing ketch  mizzen sail and convert the main to Arne’s junk design sail. The existing bermudan sail is easy to reef and control from the cockpit and balances the boat well.

    Bill,
Hans Shäubel and his wife visited Stavanger in 2001 on a cruise to Norway. A photo of his boat shows that the mast sits right in front of the cabin: That boat was a modified Liberty with a higher freeboard, but the trunk cabin appears to be very similar to the original.

Now I couldn’t keep my fingers away, so I plonked a sloop JR onto the plans, after having wiped out the original rig. The JR is a down-sized master sail with AR = 2.00, but with the lowest panel removed. Batten length was set to 4.00m.

Then I got a bit cold feet so re-installed the ketch rig for comparison. Actually I think the JR will be all right without causing a lee helm, after all. I would have tried it like that, but no guarantees...

    This person has:

Check this page It also has the drawings of the original which should make it possible to figure out the original CA and try various JR drawings on top to see if it is easy to match the same CA

The centre of area looks forward compared to this one but how well it works I don't know. You will notice that the sail is quite a low AR to move the CA aft as much as practical. You might try contacting him and asking how it worked out.
