Well that was quick! I've gone and done it. Just bought a Sabre 27 twin keel in Falmouth, just down the road. Thanks to David Tyler for the suggestion, I wasn't familiar with them. It's not unlike a Centaur. Very beamy and looks like the mast would fit nicely into the forward hatch. It was a very good price with a new Yanmar engine. Needs a lot of cleaning and tidying but should be ready for a conversion by the winter maybe. I'm just sorting out winter storage, hopefully in the village so I can work on her easily.
    I'll update as & when.

    Andrew,

I dare say that that sailplan has been well tried, as it is a near copy of the sail on my boat Ingeborg. The only difference is that this sailplan has been scaled up a tiny bit so that B is increased from 4.90 m to 5.00m.
You could well make use of Ingeborg's sailplan as it is...

    Good luck!
    Arne

In case the Ingeborg link dies, try this:

Andrew, I just looked into my JR archive and found this of a Westerly Centaur. There should be plenty of them around in the UK. This boat is well suited for a sloop JR with the mast fitted somewhere within the fore hatch area, and without ruining the interior.

    Have a look.

Arne, thank you, that's fantastic. There are quite a few Centaurs around and some are cheap as chips. What I need is an example with tatty sails and a good engine! I have considered this and, whilst they're not the prettiest of boats they are so well tried and tested, and very solid. This is very exciting. Has this rig been built and do you have any feedback on how she sails? Thanks again.

Hi David. Hope you're well and the mast project is going as you hoped. I'm gutted, I just rang St Winnow boatyard to find out about storage and she said The Horizon has been sold. It would've been perfect I'll have a look at the other suggestions.
I've sailed on a seal 28 and it was very good. Thanks, I'll report back.

Paul, thank you. I'm very motivated now and it's different (and exciting) finding a boat that fits the rig well, rather than trying to fit the rig to a boat that might not be a good one.
I tried to like my Hunter but we had a bit of a scare on a lee-shore in a blow the other day, thank goodness the outboard didn't fail us as it has a couple of times in the past.
The Maxi looks nice but the examples I've seen have been beyond my budget. We've already borrowed a lot for house improvements so there's little headroom and I'm reliant mainly on what I hope to get for Minxy.
The ideal boat would be good in a swell, which we get a lot of here, nice wide side decks, roomy cockpit and easy cabin entrance for ageing knees. Oh and we have 3 dogs who would love to come along. And a recent diesel.

I’ve just amused myself with a bit of armchair boat buying, by setting up an ‘advanced search' in the Apollo Duck site with these parameters: cruising yacht; 26 - 28ft; diesel; maximum price £5500; UK; Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset ... and got some strong contenders, including:

    A Sabre 27

    A Seal 28

    A Hunter Horizon 26

    A Sadler 29

I’d be lusting after the latter two, and the Horizon 26 is right on your doorstep!

    Hi Andrew,

that's quite a process you are going through. I am sure you will find the one boat that suits you in the end! Until then, I wish you lots of motivation!

How about a Maxi 84? My Ilvy is a Maxi 77, and I experienced how sturdy and well-thought these designs of Pelle Peterson are. Don't know how common the Maxis are at yours, but Scandinavia is just around the corner ;-)

What are you looking for with your perfect boat, except 27-28ft and no outboard?

    Cheers

    Paul
