I just heard back from my friend, the shipwright and previous owner of FROG, who writes:

I work traded the FROG last fall to an aspiring shipwright.

I loved the Frog and I sailed her much. She wasn't the boat for the shit I get in around here, though.

In heavy wind she would start this freakish roll back and forth and no matter what I tried she would be unmanageable. Couple times I had to really fight for my life!

She could be so sweet as well.

That mast maybe was to much for her?

Well [she sold again] last spring. [The new owner] isn't a sailor but he likes the boat.

He saw the card from the junk fellow [David Tyler] who was in town. I think I saw that guy's boat when he was here WOW!

Anyway she was built in Japan '57 (production boat I think).  Somebody down Evergreen way [The Evergreen State College, WA USA] did the massive retro -- I love that raised deck!

Thanks for that, Dave. Frog isn't really very much like a Folkboat, as she has a vertical counter, not a raked transom. I couldn't see what was underwater, but she might have had that form of hull.

    Hi David,

That boat is S/V FROG. The persistent rumor around Sitka is that she was built as a modified Folkboat (not converted), but noone's quite been able to confirm it.

A series of friends have owned her. The latest (rumor has it... I should give him a call) felt she was too tender under her junk rig (flat-cut PJR)! At any rate he's said to have sold her to a young live-aboard, up-and-coming sailor.

By the way, you were a bit too late to see S/V LUNA, our old junk rigged three masted cat schooner, also located in Eliason Harbor in Sitka. She's had her masts lopped and is now the M/V HORIZON under new ownership.

    So it goes!

There's a rather intriguing little junk in the harbor here. About 26ft and with a raised deck, like Fantail, but with only a footwell, no cockpit. Built as a junk, not a bermudan conversion. She seems to be mahogany carvel planked on steamed frames. I took a quick peep inside, and there are V berths forward, a galley to port and a table to starboard, and two quarter berths. No inboard engine, just an outboard bracket. She's looking a little neglected, but with a refit and in the right hands, she could go places. I left my visiting card, but there seemed to be no signs of recent use.

I've put two photos in the photo gallery here. Does anyone recognise the design?
