A note for impecunious sailmakers

A note for buyers of "seconds" cloth. I built LC's sails using "seconds", there was no fault in colour or quality that I could see. However what was most noticeable was that the edges were not true. Which is a real pain when laying out the shapes for cutting. it also means that you need to cut an extra edge or true the edge before laying out. The weave on some rolls was also not perpendicular to the edges. Not to much of a problem with junk sails but something you should be aware of.

So check the price difference before committing, it may not be worth the hassle. Also be aware that international shipping of cloth can be ruinously expensive. So check that also before you order. Shipping also varies from supplier to supplier.

I see that Marlen Textiles are listing large quantities of Factory Seconds of Odyssey III, Mustang and Top Gun. It might be worth contacting them to see if the price is better than from Rochford Supply .
