    Well...

I have been quiet lately but now I can let you know that I should be soon the fifth owner of WaterBear. The paper works are being done and then, she will be put on a truck, leaving the foggy shores of Cornwall (just kidding, I got a sunburn when I was up there two weeks ago) for the windy and sunny south of France.

I feel both excited and embarrassed. Excited because she is almost exactly what I was looking for : a simple minimal sailboat with a personality. Embarrassed because I am not even half the sailor she deserves.

In the next weeks, I will prepare her and put her in the water for a couple of months, to begin the learning. She will spend the winter on the dry.

I have to thank again Scot, her current owner, who was delightful when I came to see her.

By the way, Annie Hill, Roger Taylor, you, among others like Capucine Trochet (Discover her adventures here), or Corentin de Chattelperron (see here) are responsible for this madness.

I will share here how it goes.

PS If someone could change the title of the thread to "Water Bear 31' " or something like this, it would be nice.

Thanks to all and as I said, I am a learner here so be gentle with me.

Anything you have would be fine. All I got is a couple of pictures and a structure drawing (photocopy of a photocopy of a scan, I guess) and GA schematic drawing. Enough to fall in love, but that's it. Now, I would very much like to know everything about her past lives.

What information do you want? I have some files, and plans of the boat, and can tell you something about her performance and accomodation.

    Hi Gavin

I read the two articles but I will take any information you can give me. I will see her in two weeks.

I wrote an article in Newsletter 12 about Water Bear, which I owned and in which I attended several JR Rallies. These old newsletters can be downloaded from the JRA site by members. There is information about her 'OSTAR' Atlantic Crossing in Newsletter 19; I had sold her to Nick Barham for use in this event and I subsequently advised the Race committee on requirements for jury rig on a junk. I have sent a detailed reply to Georg Warnecke some time ago, also to another JRA member who contacted me. I inspected Water Bear last year; she was in absolutely A1 condition, but unfortunately I could not afford the asking price. It is worth mentioning that although she is referred to as a 28 foot boat by many, including me, her overall length for mooring/berthing purposes is actually 31 feet; the waterline length is almost 28 feet, which is part of the explanation of why she is so fast.

I am planning a journey to have a look at her later in the summer. I very much intend to buy her as it seems to meet almost exactly my requirements.

But it is quite an investment since I live in southern France.

Anyway, if everything goes as I expect, i should be able to share photos and infos with the forum.

From the few details and single photo, she looks very nice - perhaps she would sway me to consider a 'halfamaran'.

I have requested some more photos, but no reply.  If any one goes for a look and does not buy, I would be pleased to hear comments / see photos.  Living in Edinburgh it is a bit far to pop down for the day.

    cheers  Mark
