The medics tell us that we have to "use it or lose it" - keep on taking mental and physical exercise as we age. Designing stuff is the form of mental exercise that suits me best, and I'm happy for anyone else to make use of whatever I tinker with. Just keep on buying me virtual beers in the Yacht Club Bar.

Drawings will appear here as I make them.

And the same from myself. Having being away sailing on Footprints for the last few days I have been thinking again how lucky I was to have David arrive at the opportune time to design and help build the new sail for Footprints, which has been so successful. I will be forever grateful David for what you have so freely given.

David - in a fairer world, you would be a millionaire.  You designed a boat for me, have consulted on countless rigs for other people and are now putting out detailed drawings of the Weaverbird vane for people to make use of and save themselves thousands on buying a commercially-made vane, which probably doesn't work as well.

    Hi David

Yes I will be building a vane for Stalemate (Westerly Konsort) to upgrade the current bungee "auto helm".

No David, my Tanton has a Hydrovane and will soon be going up for sale (the boat not the vane). I am thinking more for my Kingfisher 26 Tao Zou which now sports a North Atlantic gear. I have not been very impressed with it. It became unusable 400 KM from the finish of the Azores Challenge due to a small critical screw which worked its way out of the bottom of the pushrod linkage, was replaced only to back out again within an hour and fall overboard. I have since come up with a fix but I really don't trust it anymore. I'm very impressed with your model of the Hebridean, the original is just to clunky for my tastes.

Two more builders? I'd better get down to work.

Mark, do you want the gear for your Westerly Konsort? It was designed for boats of 20 25ft, but will be just about large enough, if the servo blade is made longer, for the greater freeboard and for more power.

Glen, if you want the gear for your Tanton 43, as a rough handful this gear could be scaled up by a linear 50% and would then be about right.

David, your vane is a beautiful example of simplifying a simple principle and expertly executed. I too would love to see dimensioned drawings. I believe a copy could be made using your annotated pictures but detailed drawings would be ever so much more helpful.
