I'm wondering how much strength a fibreglass sheath around a fir birdsmouth mast will offer.

In  PJR (p 126 Tiller 1996) where they say a epoxy/glass sheathing is not thought of as adding to the strength of the mast.  Can that be true?  Some masts are built of only GRP (and they make boats out of it) so it must add some strength.

How much strength for how much sheath?  Any ideas, any guidelines?

I'm in a bit of a pickle with a new birdsmouth mast that was supposed to be 20 cm with 8 staves but was routed with a wrong bit. The company sent me the wrong bit and I didn't realize until too late. Now it will be 15.5cm with 6 staves, or something like 17cm if re-routed with the correct bit, or some messy solution with more glue, or start from scratch, or maybe a GRP sheathing . . .?
